Why PS5 users can’t dive yet
Short version: Subnautica 2 is launching in early access, and Sony generally doesn’t let unfinished games onto PlayStation storefronts. Early access means you pay to play a work-in-progress—think missing polish, the odd bug, and features that can change dramatically as devs iterate. That’s great for feedback and shaping the final game, but it runs headlong into Sony’s rules, so the PS5 version is parked for now.
Developer Unknown Worlds has been open about using early access to refine the experience, and the game’s new co-op and nastier sea life make community testing valuable. Still, with Sony’s policy in place the team won’t release a PS5 build until the game reaches a 1.0 state—no shortcuts.
When might PS5 finally get it?
There’s no exact date. Unknown Worlds hints at a multi-year early access cycle—roughly two to three years to reach full release—so if the game drops into early access now, a PS5 version could easily slip into 2028 or later. That’s an estimate, not gospel; progress, bugs found, and how the community responds could speed things up or slow them way down.
For the impatient: Subnautica 2 lands on May 14 for PC and Xbox Series X|S and will be available on Game Pass at launch. PS5 players will need to sit tight until the studio finishes the full release or Sony changes its stance on early access exceptions.
What this means for players and the community
If you’re on PC/Xbox, expect to find a rough-around-the-edges but evolving ocean full of new dangers and a co-op hook to drag friends into. Your feedback actually matters during early access—reports, bug threads, and playtest notes can shape the final game.
If you own a PS5, the wait stings, but it’s not unprecedented: other big early access hits have taken years to reach Sony hardware. Keep an eye on Unknown Worlds’ updates; they’re the ones steering the ship. In the meantime, watch streams, read impressions, or recruit a friend with Game Pass to tide you over.
