What’s in the remaster (and when to pre-game your lockpicks)
The classic stealth sandbox Thief: The Dark Project is getting a shiny new coat of paint and it’s landing on December 3. Nightdive Studios, working with Eidos-Montréal and Atari, is shipping this remaster to PS4, PS5, Xbox Series, Nintendo Switch, Switch 2, and PC (Steam, Epic, GOG). The standard edition will cost €29.99 and a Digital Deluxe edition — which bundles the soundtrack and a development diary — is priced at €34.99.
Under the hood the game uses Nightdive’s KEX engine to bring the late‑90s weirdness into modern hardware: up to 4K resolution, targets up to 120 FPS, improved textures, updated character models and animations, plus controls tuned for modern gamepads. There’s a radial wheel for items and weapons, motion control support, and a replay option for missions you’ve already cleared. All 12 original missions plus the three bonus missions from Thief: Gold are included.
New campaign, old soul — why players should care
Here’s the kicker: the remaster ships with a brand-new campaign called The Tarnished Mirror. It wasn’t conjured up from corporate brainstorming — it was made by the creators of the fan favorite Thief: The Black Parade, and Nightdive and Eidos-Montréal have worked with them to fold it into the official timeline. The new adventure acts as a narrative bridge to Thief II, introduces fresh factions, locations and foes, and leans into a Lovecraftian horror vibe.
For longtime fans this matters because the original Thief helped invent modern stealth design: light and sound were gameplay mechanics, not decoration. Instead of blasting through encounters you used shadows, listened for patrols, and made tools and patience your two best weapons. The remaster promises to keep that gameplay DNA intact while polishing the technical bits so it feels right on today’s consoles.
Community reaction has been noisy in the best way — fan creators getting official recognition, a beloved title getting modern treatment, and a new story that actually connects the dots have all stirred excitement. Whether you’re a nostalgia hunter who lived in the shadows the first time or a newcomer curious about where stealth games learned to be sneaky, this release is one to watch.
