Pre-orders and pre-loads: what’s happening
Good news for people who hate launch-day downloads: Unknown Worlds has opened Subnautica 2 for pre-order, and you can pre-load the game on Steam. The pre-load window kicks in 72 hours before Early Access goes live on May 14, so anyone who pre-orders can have the files ready and dive in the second the servers open.
The game is listed for €29.99 on PC and Xbox Series, and pre-orders are also available on the Epic Games Store. Unknown Worlds says Subnautica 2 will be on Xbox Game Pass when it launches, too — so you’ll have options whether you want to buy or jump in via the subscription.
What the Early Access version looks like (and why you should care)
Subnautica 2 arrives as an Early Access title, which means it’s a work-in-progress rather than the finished thing. Expect several biomes, new creatures, initial crafting and narrative pieces, plus online co-op so you can muck about with up to three friends (four players total) or go it alone.
There are four ready-made characters at launch and the team plans to add more customization during Early Access. Unknown Worlds is treating this phase as a community-driven build: they want player feedback to shape future updates that will expand the world, add more craftables, new biomes and story content.
Fair warning: Early Access can be rough around the edges. Bugs, unfinished features and performance hiccups are part of the bargain. The upside is you get to influence development and avoid the miserable day-one download queue thanks to pre-loading — which, let’s be honest, is the real win here.
Bottom line: if you’ve been waiting to swim into a brand-new alien ocean and want to start immediately on Day One (or you’re on Game Pass), pre-ordering and pre-loading will save you precious time — and give you a hand in shaping the game as it grows.
