The moon you’re not supposed to stare at
Game Freak’s newest outing, Beast of Reincarnation, has hit storefronts and folks are already split on whether it’s brilliant or bonkers. One of the quirkiest bits players keep talking about: staring at the moon (yes, literally looking up) will hurt your character and can end your run.
The game tells you about this early on, so we’re not spoiling plot twists here — it’s part of the setup. The moon hangs in the sky even during daytime, you’re warned not to look, and breaking that rule turns into immediate, unavoidable punishment: damage ticks and eventually a straight-to-Game-Over moment if you don’t look away.
Why this tiny rule matters (and why players love to freak out)
On the surface it’s a neat little mechanic that changes how you explore. It turns the camera into a gameplay element: tilt your head up and risk death, keep it low and you stay alive. That’s the sort of oddball design choice that can make exploration tense, force different movement strategies, and create memorable player stories.
Community reaction has been equal parts amused and baffled — clips of accidental moon-gazes, jokes about lunar snipers, and speculation about whether the story explains the whole thing later. If you’re into theories, sure, there’s room to guess, but treat those as unconfirmed until the devs or the plot spell it out.
Mechanically it’s simple but meaningful. It affects how you navigate environments, approach vertical spaces, and even how safe you feel looking at scenic vistas. And if you hate surprises mid-run, this will feel especially cruel — but also oddly clever.
Beast of Reincarnation is available on Xbox Series X|S, PC, and PS5. If you’re curious enough to test the rule yourself, maybe keep your eyes on the horizon and off the sky… unless you enjoy spectacularly silly deaths.
