What the new base system actually does
Unknown Worlds dropped the sixth dev vlog for Subnautica 2 and, yes, it’s all about bases — the thing we secretly judge everyone for in survival games. The team walks through a brand-new, real-time modular building system that replaces the old prefab snap-together method. Instead of slapping down pre-made rooms, you’ll assemble components on the fly, tweak hallways, windows and exterior bits, and make interiors feel way more customized.
Lead base designer Kiel McDonald and engineer Carolyn Lu show off how this system gives players lots more freedom, while the devs also admit it was one of the trickier parts to get right. The vlog mixes explanation with gameplay footage so you can see how a base evolves from a tiny shelter into a full-blown habitat or a tactical staging area for deeper exploration.
Why gamers should care (and when you can dive in)
The gameplay impact is clear: more expressive building means bases become meaningful hubs, not just places to stash loot. Detailed interiors, expandable exteriors and on-the-fly construction open up creative and strategic play — and the vlog even teases cooperative building with up to four players, so you and friends can plan and raise ridiculous underwater fortresses together.
Unknown Worlds is also moving the series to a fresh alien planet (so, goodbye 4546B) and using Unreal Engine 5 to bring new aquatic ecosystems to life. The studio frames base building as a core pillar of the franchise and says this system is meant to let players show off more personality in their bases than ever before.
Release-wise, Subnautica 2 is slated for Early Access this year on PC and Xbox Series. Fans seem hyped for co-op and the deeper building options, and if the dev vlog is anything to go by, the studio’s handling both creative vision and technical headaches to make building actually fun. Consider this one to watch if you like crafting ridiculous underwater lairs with your friends.
