Sony is starting to require age verification for players who want to keep using PlayStation’s social features. If you skip it, you can still play games, earn trophies and use the store — but some communication tools will be turned off for your account.
The restrictions affect voice chat, text messages, group sessions, in-game chat in certain titles, and some third-party connected features (yes, that includes Discord on console). Streaming and sharing gameplay could also be limited until you verify.
There’s no one-size-fits-all launch date yet — Sony hasn’t announced a worldwide rollout — but the company says the UK and Ireland will see some of these changes start in June. The verification will be handled via Yoti and can use a phone number, an ID document, or a facial scan.
Why it matters to players (and what to do)
On the surface this is about safety and matching features to a user’s age, but it actually touches a lot of everyday stuff gamers rely on. If you’re in clans, running raids, or streaming with friends, losing chat or broadcasting could seriously mess with how you play.
Developers can also block in-game communication or user-generated content for unverified accounts, and that varies by game. So even if the system-level chat is fine for you, some titles might still lock features until you complete verification.
Expect mixed reactions from the community: some will welcome extra safeguards for kids, others will grumble about privacy and extra friction. This trend isn’t unique to Sony — other platforms have been moving toward stronger age checks to follow new regulations and tighten safety.

If you prefer to wait, at least know which parts of PlayStation will stay open (games, trophies, store) and which won’t (most chat and sharing features).
