What’s dropping on May 20
HoYoverse has pinned the release date for Genshin Impact’s Luna VII update: May 20. The patch, called “The Truth Within the Pages of the Purana,” brings players back to Sumeru where things are, predictably, spiraling.
The short version: Nahida slips into a weird sleep, Sumeru starts teetering toward chaos, and a mysterious new foe who oddly resembles Dottore shows up in the story blurb. Finish the Archon Quest in the event window and you’ll snag 560 Protogems plus ascension materials for one of the new characters, and the update also unlocks a brand-new weekly boss.
Take the Dottore lookalike as a plot hook for now — it’s part of the official synopsis, but whether it’s Really Dottore™ or a trick is something the story will reveal.
New characters, events, and why this matters
Playable newcomers: Nicole Reeyn (a 5-star Pyro catalyst witch who can sniff out nearby treasures outside of combat), Lohen (a 5-star Cryo spear-wielder and Sub-Captain of the Fifth Company of the Knights of Favonius with a legendary quest tied to it), and Prune (a 4-star Anemo catalyst). Expect Nicole and Prune — plus Durin’s return — in the first half of the banner cycle, and then Lohen with Mavuika in the back half.
Why Nicole’s treasure-finding matters: it’s a quality-of-life shake-up. Being able to detect goodies without constantly opening the map or pinging every shrub could change how explorers plan routes and farm nodes. Lohen’s legendary quest looks aimed at players who want more lore about the Knights of Favonius, which could also mean character-focused rewards and story-heavy playtime.
Events arriving with Luna VII include a cozy Gathering Spot area called Witch’s Garden with unlockable rooms and secrets, Klee’s Mini-Coven — a minigame-focused event with rewards — and a sports tournament hosted by Eden Miliastra. There are also UI and tool improvements: a new Story Notes feature to recap plot beats, better automatic mission save notifications, and upgrades to the Daguerreotype system with more editing options.
Big-picture: HoYoverse also reminded players that the next nation, Shezhnaya, is scheduled to drop in mid-August along with visual updates for characters. That rollout will reach PC, PlayStation, Xbox Series, and mobile platforms.
Community take: fans are hyped for a playable witch and any fresh nods to Dottore, while collectors and meta-watchers are already scheming banner pulls and pity math. On the flip side, some players are wary about banner timing and whether the new mechanics will feel meaningful long-term. Either way, Luna VII looks set to keep Sumeru spicy for a while.
