Beta details & how to join
SEGA is rolling out a closed network test for Crazy Taxi: World Tour from September 12 at 2:00 a.m. to September 14 at 2:00 a.m., Spanish peninsular time. Registration is already open and closes on September 1 — but don’t expect an invite to be guaranteed. The test will only include selected players from certain regions, and its main job is to put the online systems through their paces before launch.
The beta supports cross-play between PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Steam and the Xbox PC app, so consoles and PC players can throw taxis at each other. Nintendo Switch 2 will get the full game later, but it won’t be part of this test.
What you’ll actually play (and why it matters)
This beta is purely multiplayer: the story and single-player bits are coming in the full release, but here you get a taste of the competitive chaos. Two modes are on the docket. Pickup Race pits up to six drivers against each other to scoop up passengers and deliver them for cash before time runs out — basically an all-out meter-running sprint to the top of the scoreboard.
The other mode, Cops N’ Cabbies, splits players into two teams of three. SEGA hasn’t laid out every rule yet, but expect team-based shenanigans where chasing and escaping are the name of the game. During the test you’ll be able to try two maps, four characters and six vehicles, each with customization and upgrade options so you can look ridiculous and actually be marginally better at cornering.
One highlight shown in the trailer is the West Coast map, which leans into nostalgia by dropping real-world shops into the cityscape — think IHOP and Amoeba Music making cameo appearances. SEGA says each map will feature businesses that reflect its region, and more brand tie-ins and locations will be revealed later.
Why this matters: cross-play beta tests like this are where matchmaking, latency, and balance get hammered out. If SEGA can nail stability and fun in this shakeout, the full 2027 release for PS5, Xbox Series, Nintendo Switch 2 and PC will have a much smoother launch. If nothing else, it’s a good excuse to hop in, honk aggressively, and relive the glorious chaos of arcade taxi mayhem.
