What is Clutch?
Maverick Games just lifted the curtain on Clutch, their first title: an open-world racing game with a story threaded through it. The studio is packed with former PlayGround Games talent, led by Mike Brown (the director of Forza Horizon 5), and the team says they’ve been tinkering on this for more than three years.
The reveal included concept shots and a livestream demo (which, amusingly, wasn’t saved), and the pitch is aimed squarely at people who live for driving sims and car culture. Expect heavy-duty customization — not just paint and rims, but interior tweaks too — so your ride can end up looking and feeling like you built it in your garage at 3 a.m.
On the gameplay side Maverick describes an open-world PvPvE setup with main missions and spontaneous side objectives that can explode into chaos at any moment. There’s talk of “legal races by day, street races by night,” which sounds a little Need for Speed-adjacent, though that link is just an observation, not a confirmed design slogan.
Why gamers should care (and what to watch)
The big hook here is pedigree: a team led by Forza Horizon vets implies a solid driving foundation, while the narrative and PvPvE angle suggest they want to shake up the usual arcade-open-world formula rather than copy it verbatim. Deep customization — including interiors — could change how players personalize vehicles, and PvPvE layers unpredictable player-versus-player tension on top of world-driven events.
Publisher-wise, there’s a notable development: Clutch was originally set to be published by Amazon, but that partnership has since ended. Maverick confirmed the split earlier this year. That’s a straightforward fact, but it’s worth keeping an eye on since publishing changes can affect release timing and support.
For now this was a teaser-level glimpse. The full trailer lands at Summer Game Fest on June 5, so we’ll get a better look then. Until then, expect excitement, cautious optimism, and a lot of speculation in forums — and yes, people are already imagining midnight street runs in fully customized interiors.
